Board of Education VacancyONE (1) Board of Education seat will be filled this year at the Annual Vote that is scheduled for May 19, 2026. The vacancy is the result of the expiration of the following term of office:
Seat presently held by Michele Szarek. The term is for 5 years.
Petitions will be available from the District Office on March 2, 2026 for the purpose of obtaining at least 25 signatures of qualified voters in the District. Petitions must be returned to the District Office at 74 Cold Brook St no later than 5:00 PM on , Monday, April 20, 2026 - which is 30 days before the Annual Vote.
Interested persons may wish to attend a Zoom Meeting "How to become a School Board of Education Candidate and What You Need to Know" on Tuesday, March 17, 2026 at 6 pm. The two-hour program is sponsored by the regional School Boards Institute. Candidate resources developed in 2022 and 2024 are available HERE.
The Poland Board of Education is composed of seven school district residents elected by voters. Each board member is elected to a five-year term. Board members are not financially compensated.
The board is the official policy-making body of the school district. It is responsible for carrying out the laws and regulations pertaining to the education of students within the district. The board establishes district policy, reviews curriculum and programs of study, and approves the hiring of all personnel, as well as establishing the conditions of employment. The board is also responsible for developing an annual budget for public approval.
