POLAND – Poland Central School District Class of 2018 valedictorian Patrick “P.J.” Mahoney Jr. spoke during his graduation address about how common sayings have compared to his own experiences through high school.

For the saying “you are who you surround yourself with,” Mahoney said he learned to only allow in positive influences. For “you are a big fish in a small pond,” he found that a small pond is only relevant to those who let it define their success. And for “time flies when you’re having fun,” he said his takeaway wasn’t a lesson as much as it was a challenge to everyone in attendance.

“Live life to the fullest, and regardless of your age, let time fly,” he said.

The 84th annual Poland Central School District commencement took place on Friday, June 22, with 34 graduates in the Class of 2018. Students received their diplomas, and dozens of special awards, recognitions and scholarships were given out during the ceremony. The graduation also featured performances by various students and speeches from commencement speaker Michele Bolos, Poland Principal Greg Cuthbertson and salutatorian Franklin Szarek, who reflected on his experiences at Poland and applying for college.

Cuthbertson said he expects and hopes that students will continue to make the Poland school community proud during the next phase of their lives and advised them that if they do the right things, life will find a way to reward them.

Bolos is the chief executive officer and founder of Next Tier Concepts, a national security solutions provider that she started in 1998.

She said the one takeaway she wanted students to remember from her speech is that “your life is short.” She spoke about the importance of empathy, honesty, accountability and trust, and she tied all of them to her theme.

“Your life is short,” she said. “Choose to live it well.”
