POLAND – Poland Central School District elementary students and teachers showed their support for World Kindness Day on Friday, Nov. 13, by wearing red shirts and featuring the theme of kindness throughout that week.

The red shirts were because World Kindness Day organizers selected the color red this year as a tribute to Fred Rogers of “Mr. Rogers’ Neighborhood” because of the kindness he showed, Poland school social worker Kimberlee Schneider said.

“All week, the students were encouraged to show small acts of kindness toward their peers, teachers and family,” Schneider said. “On Friday, they were encouraged to wear the color red. The color red was chosen in the spirit of Mr. Rogers, who always wore a red cardigan, but he also always spoke about the importance of being kind to one another.”

The celebration of World Kindness Day also tied into the virtual Morning Meetings that elementary teachers have the option of participating in once per week this school year. The meetings used to be held in person on Mondays, but switched to virtual this school year and are organized by Assistant Principal Gina Smith, school counselor Jan Kochan and Schneider.

Each week for the Morning Meetings, a character education word is highlighted. A classroom that exemplifies the character word is chosen each week for recognition.

“This gets the kids really involved in learning about the character word but also in acting on the word here in their school community,” Schneider said.

For the week of World Kindness Day, the character word of course was kindness.

Poland Principal Greg Cuthbertson said on World Kindness Day that the focus on kindness connects to ongoing educational support for students.

“This is part of our social emotional learning program, and we wanted to bring awareness to our school community about World Kindness Day,” Cuthbertson said. “We talk all the time about character, following the ‘golden rule’ and being kind to one another. We saw a lot of red today to support that.”
