PreK students begin year with ‘more friends,’ ‘more opportunities’
Poland Central School District prekindergarten students completed their first week of school today, Friday, Sept. 10, to begin their educational journey during a year that everyone hopes will be a few steps closer to “normal.”
There are more than 30 prekindergarten students at Poland this school year – compared to just 14 last year due largely to COVID-19 and required restrictions that were put in place, Poland prekindergarten teacher Laurie Schmid said.
“I think we’re excited just to have more friends to play with and more opportunities to play together and learn together,” Schmid said. “I’m looking forward to seeing how much they’re going to learn and grow this year.”
The first week for prekindergarten students included focusing on being good friends, being kind, taking turns and practicing good bus safety, Schmid said.
“It’s been very exciting,” she said. “Everybody is happy to be in school, meeting new friends and learning new things.”
“And we love painting with our hands,” prekindergarten teacher aide Amie Robinson added, referring to students enjoying finger painting.
Schmid and Robinson talked about the first week while also interacting with students, who put together structures with multicolored pieces that snap together and told the teachers what they were making.
Schmid said students have been able to get into a routine through the first week.
“They’re adjusting very well,” Schmid said. “We’ve had a good week.”
