POLAND – Poland Central School District sixth-graders have been learning about the steps and the tools required to carry out experiments, participate in the science fair and conduct science labs in high school.

Sixth-grade teacher Teri Zuchowski recently introduced students to using a triple beam balance, stopwatch, graduated cylinder, hand lens, thermometer and more.

“It’s important for them to get familiar with scientific tools and instruments at the middle school level, so they’re prepared when they get up to high school,” Zuchowski said.

The opportunity to try using scientific tools connects to the curriculum in Zuchowski’s earth science class.

“They’re learning how to conduct an experiment,” Zuchowski said.

In addition to being used in later years, the tools will be put to use in some instances during sixth grade – such as using a hand lens to look at rocks and using a stopwatch and thermometer in “The Skittles Experiment,” Zuchowski said.

“I’m introducing them to the scientific method,” Zuchowski said. “With that, I have also exposed them to different scientific instruments and equipment, and that will prepare them for science fair in seventh grade and for the labs they will do in high school.”
