Student board representative takes oath of office

District Clerk Donna Wellington administers the oath of office to the newest ex-officio student board member on Thursday, October 20.

POLAND – Poland Central School District senior Gavin Krauciunas recently began his term as ex-officio student board member. Krauciunas, a senior, expressed interest in the role after attending American Legion Boys State at the end of June and receiving information about expectations and responsibilities from Poland Central School District Principal Gregory Cuthbertson. The official oath was recited at the monthly meeting held on October 20, 2022.

Cuthbertson traditionally visits classrooms at the end of each school year to talk to students about the role. “Gavin has shown an interest in government and politics in his time here at Poland CSD.  I commend him for taking on this role as the student board member and giving the student voice to the Board of Education.  He will be a great addition to the board and provide great insight to the student body,” he said.

Krauciunas is the eighth student to take this role for the district. Poland’s Board of Education presented a referendum to voters in May 2015 which sought to establish the student board member role. The student sits with board members and may participate in all public meetings, but does not vote or attend executive sessions. The referendum passed.

Like elected board members, he receives no salary or stipend.  Krauciunas does receive at least two hours’ community service credit for each meeting he attends up to a maximum of twenty hours.
