More than $4,000 in donated prize money was awarded as 68 students presented at the 35th annual Poland Central Schools Science Fair in the school gymnasium on March 9.
Students in grades 7-11, who had been working on their projects since September, presented to a judging panel that featured area science experts and professionals, including some alumni.
Each student entered in one of three categories: natural science, physical science and math/technology.
The judges reviewed the projects while considering six areas of criteria: creative ability, thoroughness, skill, clarity, knowledge and scientific method.
Junior-level awards went to students in grades 7 and 8 and senior-level awards went to grades 9-11. Some category award winners will have the opportunity to compete at the Utica College Regional Science Fair on April 1.
Poland science teachers Kevin Ford and Jessica Meyer are appointed advisors for the science fair and manage all the details of the event.
Meyer said she is impressed with the uniqueness of the projects. “There are still creative concepts and presentations we have not seen before, even after 35 years,” she said.
Meyer said she has received compliments from judges about how well the students presented. “It shows the students have enthusiasm for their work, because they chose the topic that interests them,” she said.
Elizabeth Beck was named Grand Champion at the junior level with her project called “Expired or Unexpired?.”
Jack Hoffman was named Grand Champion at the senior level with his project called “How well does your mouthwash kill bacteria?”
Both also won first place at their levels in the Natural Science category.
