State champions: Poland boys soccer team earns share of 2023 title
For the first time in school history, the Poland boys soccer team earned a state title.
After two 40-minute halves in regulation and two sudden victory, 15-minute overtime periods, the Tornadoes tied with Section VII’s Chazy 2-2 in the state Class D championship on Saturday. The teams were named co-champions.
According to New York State Public High School Athletic Association rules, there are no penalty kicks in state championship final contests after the two overtime periods.
“Bringing a state championship home to Poland means everything to this team. I am proud of every player in this program for all the work they put in throughout the season,” said head coach Greg Haver.
Chazy led 2-1 at halftime, with Poland’s lone first half goal coming from junior Carter Cookinham.
Senior Daetyn Jones scored to tie the game with about nine minutes left to play in regulation.
Sophomore goalkeeper Noah Lamphere came up with big saves to keep the Tornadoes in the game.
“Every player was important in this journey to the state title. It is such a special moment for everyone. I would like to thank the community, parents and school for their support not only this year but for the journey leading up to this,” said Haver.
