Poland Board of Education names interim principal for secondary education

The Poland Board of Education named Dr. Joanne Shelmidine the Jr./Sr. High School principal at its February 15, 2024 meeting.  


Shelmidine comes to Poland after working most recently as the interim superintendent at Roxbury Central School in Delaware County from December 2022 through June 2023.


She has worked in education for 32 years, beginning as a middle school ELA teacher for the Syracuse City School District. 


Dr. Shelmidine has worked in urban, suburban, and rural school districts throughout her career. The last 22 years, she has served as an administrator in various capacities. Shelmidine recently retired as the superintendent of the New York Mills Union Free School District. 


She comes to Poland with experience as the director of curriculum for the Westmoreland Central School District, superintendent of the Remsen Central School District and as middle school principal for the Sandy Creek Central School District. Dr. Shelmidine started her administrative career as the director of alternative education at Herkimer BOCES. 


“Dr. Shelmidine brings a wealth of experience to Poland. She has experience in the classroom and as an administrator. I look forward to working with her to provide opportunities for our students to be productive members of our society while Mr. Manley continues his administrative coursework,” said superintendent Laura Dutton. 


“I am thrilled to be here in Poland. My goal is to be a resource for all students, staff and families,” said Dr. Shelmidine.


Dr. Shelmidine started serving as principal on Feb. 26 and will be in the position through June 30, 2024.
