Our Academics
The Poland Central School District’s instructional program includes all courses of instruction required by the Education Law, the Rules of the Board of Regents, and Regulations of the Commissioner of Education as well as such other courses and programs as the Board of Education determines to be beneficial to the students of the district.
Goals for the Instructional Program
The Board of Education has established the following goals for the instructional program:
- to instill in students basic skills as well as the knowledge, attitudes and habits that will allow them to adopt, adapt and utilize these skills in the ever changing environment;
- to provide an education program that challenges each student;
- to develop a comprehensive program that meets state standards and involves input from groups within the school community;
- to create a learning process that emphasizes human worth and incorporates real and relevant experiences that students may identify with and learn from easily.
Grade Promotion and Placement Policy
Decisions about student promotion and placement are at the final discretion of the administration. These decisions are guided by recommendations of principals, teachers and staff members, past academic performance and parent/guardian input. Past academic performance refers to a variety of indicators of student achievement and growth. The District’s promotion and placement policy was adopted by the Board of Education following a review by the district administration.
Response to Intervention (RtI) Services
Academic Intervention Services, now known as Response to Intervention (RtI) services, are available to students who need additional learning support. It is a multi-step approach to providing services and interventions to students with learning/behavioral problems at increasing levels of intensity. The progress students make at each level of intervention is monitored through data collection. The results of this monitoring are used to make decisions about the need for further research-based instruction and/or interventions in general education, in special education or both.
